replace a RAIDZONE disk without shutting down the computer system. If all partitions on the failed disk were fault tolerant, the replacement disk will be automatically rebuilt from the redundant data.
Hot Swapping a Disk
Because swapping a disk is a manual intervention, things can and sometimes will go wrong. In the worst case, you might swap out the wrong disk or a disk that contains partitions that are not fault tolerant, and lose all your data. We recommend that you always make a tape backup of your disk array before swapping out a disk.
Use the mouse to choose the failed disk you want to swap out. Typically, a failed disk will have a red drive icon and an unambiguously bad status message.
From the Repair menu, choose Hot Swap.
The RAIDZONE Administrator program will then ask for confirmation before performing any operations. If any partitions on the failed drive are not Fault Tolerant, RAIDZONE will produce a message warning of data loss.
The failed disk will be powered down, and a prompt will appear requesting that you physically swap the disk with its replacement. A flashing red LED indicates the physical location of the bad disk in the SmartCan enclosure. Swap out the disk, and when the replacement is installed click the OK button in the message box.
If the failed disk was a member of a fault tolerant set, RAIDZONE will automatically begin rebuilding its data.
If the failed disk was a member of a Disk Level Fault Tolerant Set, then a progress bar will appear indicating the progress of the rebuild. If the failed disk only contained Partition Level Fault Tolerant Set(s), the rebuilding is performed in the back ground, and no progress bar is displayed. In either case, the disk is reset to the healthy state when the rebuild is successful. |
