3.3.2 Repairing an Orphaned or Unhealthy Disk

When a disk is not in the "healthy" state, RAIDZONE Administrator displays the disk with a red icon, and tags the logical state as "orphaned".

In this example, the first two disks are mirrored at the disk level. The second disk has a red icon, and its state is "orphaned". The first disk has a yellow icon (because it is no longer fault tolerant), and its state is "healthy".

A disk can enter the "orphaned" state if one or more of its partitions are orphaned, or if its Disk Level Mirror is orphaned. The RAIDZONE system tags a disk as "orphaned" when the disk drive cannot be accessed, or when the drive reports a read or write error. If the problem results from a physical defect such as a crashed head or bad sectors on the disk, we recommend that you replace the orphaned disk using the Hot Swap or Exchange Disk With Hot Spare command under the Repair menu item. If the problem is external to the disk (e.g. a cabling or power supply problem), resolve the problem and then use the Rebuild Fault Tolerant Set command under the Repair menu item to rebuild the redundant data from the other disks.
