ChiliPORTS Wiring

All ChiliPORTS cards are shipped with connector panels containing 10-pin RJ48 modular jacks. These industry standard jacks accept plastic snap-in plugs similar to the ones used for connecting telephones, and allow you to use standard flat cable and cabling tools to complete your installations.

ChiliPORTS cards are available with 4, 8, 16 or 32 serial ports per card. Up to 16 ports, the connector panel screws directly onto the back of the card. For the 32-port card, and for optional DB25- and DB9-style connector panels available on special order for the other cards, the connector panel attaches to the card by way of a cable.

Also available from Consensys or your dealer is an optional wall-mounting bracket and cable for the 8-port and 16-port ChiliPORTS cards. This custom bracket allows you to mount an 8-port or 16-port connector panel on the wall, and connect it to the back of your computer with a cable.

The ten wires in the ChiliPORTS RJ48 jack have the following functions:

Pin-out of RJ48 Jacks

Pin #SignalDescriptionDirection
1RIRing IndicatorInput to ChiliPORTS
2DSRData Set ReadyInput to ChiliPORTS
3RTSRequest To SendOutput from ChiliPORTS
4GNDGround Chassis Ground
5TxDTransmitted DataOutput from ChiliPORTS
6RxDReceived DataInput to ChiliPORTS
7SGSignal Ground Reference
8CTSClear To Send Input to ChiliPORTS
9DTR Data Terminal ReadyOutput from ChiliPORTS
10DCDData Carrier DetectInput to ChiliPORTS

The order of the wires in the ChiliPORTS RJ48 jacks is designed to allow you to use whichever size of wire and RJ48 plug is suitable for your installation. If all you need is Send, Receive and Ground, a 4-pin RJ45 plug can be used. If you also need hardware handshaking (RTS/CTS), you can use a 6-pin plug. An 8-pin plug is ideal for terminals and printers, since it supports all RJ45 signals except the modem control lines RI and DCD. And if you're connecting modems, use 10-pin plugs to get all the signals.

On Windows NT, the device most commonly connected to a ChiliPORTS card is probably a modem. Every ChiliPORTS card is shipped with a length of 10-wire cable and a DB25 adapter wired for connection to a modem. That wiring is as follows:

10-Pin RJ48 to DB25 Modem

WireFunction at ComputerDirectionDB25 Pin # at Modem
1RIto ChiliPORTS22
2 DSRto ChiliPORTS6
3RTS from ChiliPORTS4
4GNDGround1
5TxDfrom ChiliPORTS2
6RxD to ChiliPORTS3
7SGSignal Ground7
8 CTS to ChiliPORTS5
9DTRfrom ChiliPORTS20
10DCD to ChiliPORTS8

If you need additional RJ48-to-DB25 modem adapters, they are available as standard Consensys parts. Contact your dealer or Consensys.

If you are connecting a ChiliPORTS port to a terminal or serial printer, you cannot use the DB25 modem adapter included with the ChiliPORTS card. Wiring for modems is different from terminals and printers; the standard wiring for terminals and printers is as follows:

10-Pin RJ48 to DB25 Terminal/Printer

WireFunction at ComputerDirectionDB25 Pin # at Terminal/Printer
1RI to ChiliPORTSN/A
2DSRto ChiliPORTS6
3RTSfrom ChiliPORTS5
4GNDGround 1
5 TxD from ChiliPORTS 3
6RxD to ChiliPORTS2
7SGSignal Ground7
8 CTS to ChiliPORTS4
9 DTR from ChiliPORTS 8
10 DCD to ChiliPORTS 20

If you want to purchase RJ48-to-DB25 terminal/printer adapters, they are available as standard Consensys parts. Contact your dealer or Consensys.
